Bioakkumulation

Bioakkumulation beschreibt die Anreicherung von Chemikalien im Organismus. Dabei wird die Aufnahme von Substanzen über die Nahrung (Biomagnifikation) von der direkten Anreicherung aus der abiotischen Umwelt (Biokonzentration) unterschieden. Experimentell bestimmte Bioakkumulationsfaktoren sind ein wichtiges Element der Risikobewertung chemischer Substanzen. Basis für die Durchführung von Biokonzentrationsstudien an Fischen ist die Richtlinie OECD 305 (Flow-through fish test).

Insbesondere für Chemikalien hoher Lipophilität (log P >5) stellt die Durchführung von Biokonzentrationsstudien jedoch häufig ein Problem dar. Die schlechte Wasserlöslichkeit lipophiler Substanzen beeinträchtigt die Einstellung stabiler Testkonzentrationen und kann unter bestimmten Bedingungen zu unpräzisen Messungen der Testsubstanz im Medium führen. Zudem reichern sich Chemikalien in der Umwelt mit steigender Lipophilität verstärkt über die Nahrungskette an, so dass den Biomagnifikationsprozessen eine höhere Beachtung geschenkt werden müsste. Für Chemikalien mit schlechter Wasserlöslichkeit wird daher zukünftig im Rahmen der revidierten Richtlinie OECD 305 ein alternatives Testdesign zur Durchführung von Bioakkumulationsstudien auf Basis von Fütterungsexperimenten zur Wahl stehen. Ziel dieser Studien ist die Bestimmung eines Biomagnifikationsfaktors (BMF).

Die Durchführung von Biomagnifikationsstudien gemäß der revidierten Richtlinie wird momentan in einem internationalen Ringtest validiert. Neben den Testlabors für Fischstudien des Fraunhofer IME, Schmallenberg und der BASF, Ludwigshafen, nehmen weitere Labors aus den USA, Kanada, Japan, England, Frankreich, Norwegen und der Schweiz an der Studie teil.
