Sustainable animal health solutions

Motivation and Problem

Animals and humans are connected in a deep and complex way. Parasites such as ticks, fleas and worms are not only a nuisance, but also harbour considerable health risks. They can severely affect the health of our pets and livestock, cause economic damage and sometimes the parasites and associated infectious diseases can also be transmitted from animals to humans.

Goal and Solution

As one of the leading suppliers of animal health products, Boehringer Ingelheim supports veterinarians as well as pet and farm animal owners worldwide and distributes solutions for protection against internal and external parasites. The aim of the project is to improve the welfare of animals and humans by identifying and developing ecologically sustainable antiparasitics. To this end, Boehringer has entered into a partnership with the Fraunhofer Natural Product Discovery Platform, which will integrate the Fraunhofer Natural Product Discovery Platform into Boehringer's innovation programme for antiparasitics. Fraunhofer, with its expertise in identifying novel natural products from biological resources, will contribute one of the world's most important collections of microorganisms and a mature analytical technology platform.

Following the successful completion of the first and second project phases, the collaboration has been extended.
