Physical Metrology

Reasearch

The research activities of the Physical Metrology department focus on the materials science-oriented investigation and development of functional materials. The focus is on materials with optical and thermal functionalities, whose properties and interactions are physically characterized and understood under defined excitation and environmental conditions.

The research addresses fundamental relationships between material structure, energy conversion, and transport processes in order to systematically characterize and evaluate functional properties. In addition, material-based approaches are investigated that enable the indirect determination of physical quantities through changes in material responses.

Highlights

Luminescent glasses for white light-emitting diodes

Longer lifetime, more stable colour impression - this is achieved by new phosphors based on luminescent glasses.

Laser structured phosphors

Together with the Fraunhofer Application Center for Inorganic Phosphors, HELLA is developing a new headlamp prototype.

Thermally-stable phosphors for white LEDs

Phosphors based on lanthanide-doped glasses hold the potential of increasing the operational lifetime of white light-emitting diodes along with ensuring a more stable colour impression over the course of the lifetime of these LEDs.
