The overall goal of the German-Chilean bilateral research and development project "Advantage" is to improve several properties of the potato that are currently unfavorable for food and/or industrial applications. Among other things, the focus is on high-quality potato protein, which is produced in large quantities as a by-product of starch production. This is currently of limited use because it is contaminated with harmful glycoalkaloids such as solanine. We are also developing a new starch with a high phosphate content that will significantly expand the range of applications for potato starch. In addition, we are pursuing approaches that (1) prevent browning of the tuber after mechanical damage, (2) make potato plants more heat tolerant, and (3) for the first time significantly facilitate the introgression of desired alleles from diploid breeding forms into the cultivated tetraploid gene pool.
