“Save the date” Prof. Dr. Detlef Bartsch - “Regulatory aspects of genome editing – where precaution and innovation should meet”
Seminar - Aachen, 5 September 2018
On the 5. of September 2018 Prof. Dr. Detlef Bartsch, Head of Department Genetic Engineering from the BVL - the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, will speak at the Fraunhofer IME. The Focus of his seminar will be the “Regulatory aspects of genome editing - where precaution and innovation should meet”. Start of the seminar will be at 9 a.m., located at the Fraunhofer IME in Aachen, Forckenbeckstraße 6, Room A003. Guests are welcome.
The EU Court of Justice decided on the 25th of July 2018 that all genome edited organisms - also those who are not distinguishable from those derived from classical breeding technologies or natural recombination processes - are classified as GMO. However, an overly broad interpretation of the precautionary principle should not turn into a universal incantation to block innovation. The discourse on this topic is not limited to technology, but includes also social and ethical aspects.
