Using yeast as an expression system has been a special area of interest and core competence of the Integrated Production Platforms Department.
With Pichia pastoris, Hansenula polymorpha, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the department has a proven track record of all relevant yeast expression systems.
In a variety of internal and external protein production projects we have successfully dealt with the yeast-specific issues and problems from transformation via high-cell-density fermentation to cell separation and homogenization. Feasibility studies, process development projects and Non-GMP protein production campaigns have been carried out for secreted as well as intracellular proteins, generating an extraordinarily broad know-how on the upscaled protein production in yeast.
For Pichia pastoris, we have successfully transferred an existing process for the production of a vaccine candidate to our facility, improved the process at specific points, adapted it to the IME’s GMP facility and produced three GMP-batches of bulk recombinant vaccine to be used in clinical trials.
