Recombinant therapeutic proteins and subunit vaccines play an increasing role in modern medicine and health protection. To meet the increasing demand for affordable recombinant proteins transgenic plants and plant suspension cultures are developed to complement existing production platforms based on fermentation of mammalian cells or microorganisms.
Researchers at the plant biotechnology department at Fraunhofer IME have more than 15 years of experience in the production of recombinant proteins (antibodies, enzymes, subunit vaccines) in tobacco plants and other crop species. Current research activities focus on the contained and automated cultivation, optimization of protein quality and quantity and downstream processing.
In close cooperation with our international partners from academia and industry we are working to turn research results into innovative products.
